Mottled Dawn

Sadat Hassan Manto

Mottled Dawn gathers fifty sketches and short stories by Saadat Hasan Manto on the Partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan in 1947. Translated by Khalid Hasan and others, the collection includes his best-known Partition pieces such as Toba Tek Singh and The Dog of Titwal. With piercing honesty and nothing prettied up, Manto captures the violence, madness and political turmoil of the time and the harrowing human cost for ordinary people on both sides of the new border.
