Apple In The Dark
Clarice Lispector
A man named Martim commits a crime and flees into the desolate interior of Brazil. He arrives at a remote farm where he works as a farmhand, until he is reported to the authorities and arrested. The novel's interest lies less in the plot than in Martim's quest for self-awareness and meaning, echoing the story of Eden and ideas of evolution. Originally published in Portuguese in 1961, it is a metaphysical novel that Lispector considered her best.
