The Bookseller of Kabul

Asne Seierstad

Journalist Asne Seierstad lived for months with Sultan Khan, a Kabul bookseller, and his family, letting them speak for themselves. For more than twenty years Khan defied the authorities, Communist or Taliban, to supply books to the people of Kabul, and was arrested, interrogated and imprisoned. This intimate portrait of a man of principle and his family, with two wives, five children and many relatives in a four-room house, shows life in a war-ravaged city, where women still face arranged marriages and crippling limits.
