Savitribai Phule

Reeta Ramamurthy Gupta

As India's first female teacher, Savitribai Phule demanded dignity and education for all. Supported by her widowed mother Sagunabai Kshirsagar and her friend Fatima Sheikh, she waged an all-out war against social inequities. Ostracized, abused and tormented, the three women persevered to enable education for women and the emancipation of widows, untouchables and backward castes. Set in mid-nineteenth-century Poona, it is a feminist and irreverent tale of three women who believed they could make a difference.
