The Private Memoirs & Confessions of a Justified Sinner

Published anonymously in 1824, this Gothic novel follows Robert Wringhim, the son of a radical Calvinist minister, who is convinced of his own divine salvation regardless of his sins. Led on by a sinister companion, Gil-Martin, he embarks on a spree of murder and madness in eighteenth-century Scotland, though it remains uncertain whether Gil-Martin really exists.
