Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor, mostly Black neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school she attends. That balance is shattered when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood friend Khalil by a police officer. Now Starr must decide whether to speak up, knowing that her voice could change her community and put her in danger.

My thoughts
4.5/5stars Major TWs for this book: police brutality, gun violence, death of a friend, gruesome descriptions of injuries, gore, blood, flashbacks to childhood trauma, racism, racial profiling, implied domestic violence I read this book as a part of the #BlackHistoryMonth readathon. I decided to read a couple of books by and for black people this month. They are all from fiction to non-fiction, prose to poetry etc. And this was one of my first picks, needless to say it was very intense, very real. I knew before going into this that is about police brutality but still I was just left aghast when I finished it. What's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be Let's just say that this book should already be declared a compulsory read for every person from the privileged section of the society. It's literally an eye-opener. We're so oblivious to racism around us that this book will def help us take a step back and reflect on our daily actions. JUST READ IT. JUST READ IT ALREADY.
