The Guest Cat opens Goodreads in a new tab

Takashi Hiraide

A couple in their thirties live in a small rented cottage in a quiet part of Tokyo, working from home as freelance writers. One day a neighbor's cat invites itself into their kitchen, and keeps returning, bringing small joys and more light and color into their days. A subtly moving, exceptionally beautiful novel about the transient nature of life, translated by Eric Selland.

My thoughts

2/5stars ...observation is at its core an expression of love which doesn’t get caught up in sentiment. Although the blurb made it sound like something that would become a new fav and the lyrical descriptions of Japanese literature were enchanting to read but the essence of the story at its core was just lost for me. It might be a case of "lost in translation" or maybe I just didn't connect as much as I'd have hoped. Big disappointing miss, this was.
