My thoughts
3.5/5 Is this is the best psychological thriller i have read in like FOREVER? probably? was i scared shitless the entire time? yes. did i have to actually stop reading it at night because I just could not continue? i prefer not to say. am i gonna shut up about this anytime soon? nope. Not only is the "horror" aspect of the story amazing, but the fact that Hendrix managed to weave the socio-political issues so well into this weird vampire story is the cherry on the cake. Although it is frustrating to see the amount of gaslighting in this story, and the explicit racism, but that is the point. you are supposed to feel angry so good job Grady, I guess? “Why do you pretend what we do is nothing?” she asked. “Every day, all the chaos and messiness of life happens and every day we clean it all up. Without us, they would just wallow in filth and disorder and nothing of any consequence would ever get done. Who taught you to sneer at that? I’ll tell you who. Someone who took their mother for granted.” I think this book was the perfect start to my spooky reads/Halloween reads! HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!! Book Trigger Warnings- Rape(MULTPLE VERY VERY VERY GRAPHIC), Racism, Classism, Sexism, Gaslighting (OH GOD SO MUCH GASLIGHTING), Child Abuse, Spousal Abuse, Gore, Rats (OH GOD SO MANY RATS), Cockroaches (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGH)
