My thoughts
4.0/5stars Urban fantasy with a background of clans, clan wars and the likes?? I'M SOLD. Jade City is the first book in the trilogy which revolves around these two clan families who are constantly at war with each other over a substance called "Jade" which gives them some sort of magical powers but also comes with certain costs. This book was filled with action, fights loads and loads of political drama and not a single page of this big chunky book went by where i felt bored. I was always on edge, eager to know what happens next. Even tho the ending of this book was a very satisfactory one, I am definitely curious to read more of this world, this setting. I have been chosen and trained to carry the gift of the gods for the good and protection of the people, and against all enemies of the clan, no matter their strength or numbers. I join myself to the fellowship of jade warriors, freely and with my whole being, and I will call them my brothers-in-arms. Should I ever be disloyal to my brother, may I die by the blade. Should I ever fail to come to the aid of my brother, may I die by the blade. Should I ever seek personal gain at the expense of my brother, may I die by the blade. Under the eyes of all the gods in Heaven, I pledge this. On my honor, my life, and my jade. The character arc for some of the main characters was just brilliant, loved how they grew from being shy/indecisive to playing major roles for the story's progress. There is also a gay character which is nice to know. And how everyone (despite being from a secluded, underdeveloped island nation) was so accepting. That was very interesting. All he knew now was that remorse had a natural limit. After a certain amount of time, it finished eating a person hollow and had to alchemize into anger that could be turned outward lest it consume its host entirely Content warnings fo violence, death, drug use, explicit sex scenes, mentions of sexual assault, suicide and self-harm. Obviously look into that before going into this book. But yes with all the hype going on about it, I totally think it deserves it and if you love yourself a good fantasy with an urban setting filled with lots of emotions and action, this is the one.
