2.5 ⭐️ rounded down "Men have always been permitted in fiction and in life to simply be what they are, no matter how dark or terrifying that might be. But with a woman, we expect an answer, a reason." okay what the actual fuck did i just read….. as someone who isn’t the biggest horror reader and went into this one absolutely blind (just knowing that this is a debut “extreme horror” novel) reading this was certainly an experience. think American Psycho but with a “modern feminist” twist. this book was vile, gory, raunchy, unhinged, and definitely not for the weaker hearts. like i didn’t even read the blurb so the whole American Psycho thing was also an interesting revelation. there are so many fucking unhinged things in this book where do i even begin goddamit… 1. pages and pages of description of Maeve getting off on (literally masturbating) while destroying a Karen’s life on an online forum. 2. eggs. i don’t think i will ever be able to look at eggs the same. oh my gosh, just why? what was the need? 3. the eyeball on the cover. HOLY HELL. that scene still haunts my nightmares. 4. oh look at me i drink at the same bar as Johny Depp. and occasionally raise a glass with him- i am so cool. (real scene btw) I could have ignored all of these things for a second but the fact that this was marketed as a “feminist slasher”, the new “feminist” American Psycho- esque book- is my gripe. WHERE IS THE FUCKING FEMINISM? WHAT EXACTLY IS FEMINIST ABOUT THIS BOOK? the fact that the main character is as annoyingly nihilistic and pretentious as every MMC in a horror novel? (i did in fact like that) or the fact that she enacts sexual violence against women? even finds new and creative ways to do so? or that she says that she (and her grandmother ) have “violent wolves” inside them at least 200 thousand times? oh and the way she keeps name dropping all of these shitty male horror authors? like yeah i am not the most well versed with the genre so maybe this one is on me- but name dropping Georges Bataille, or Chuck Palahniuk is not it lol. Book Content Warnings: violence, gore, rape (including very graphic genital dismemberment, harm, etc.), murder, torture, terminal illness, descriptions of a dying elderly person (bed sores, coma, etc.), drugging without consent, animal death, scat, cannibalism, urolagnia, domestic abuse, violence, racism, sexism, classism, bullying
