My thoughts
2.5/5 rounded up a story of revenge, a story of vigilante justice- a story of two homophobic men unlearning their prejudices and bigotry coming together to “avenge” their sons’ deaths. while it is a fast paced, action packed, unputdownable thriller - i am afraid the target audience for this book isn’t me. heck, i am not even sure who is the target demographic for this book. because i can’t imagine bigoted homophobic racist men reading this and suddenly becoming changed human beings. and to people like me, on the other side- this just feels like too little too less. like thanks for acknowledging gay people exist? that they have a right to a regular normal life too? now that two cis het men have said it surely gay people’s right to exist gotta be taken more seriously right? maybe if this book came out in the 90s or the early 2000’s even it’d make sense but not in the big year of 2021. the casual sprinkles of sexism and objectification of women every two pages did not help either. i’m all for shutting my brain and enjoying a silly old popcorn read but then this book was presented to me as a beautiful tale that tugs at the heart of a common man with it’s characters and their journey while all i saw was two cis het men being annoying about stuff. 2 stars for the fun action scenes and the slight glimpse into the lives of Isiah and Derek.
