3.75/5 🌟 having previously read only a short story by this author and heard many mixed reviews of it- i was sceptically scared of reading this. of possibly being disappointed but oh my was I beautifully surprised. the writing is flowery and there is a book within the book- the whole concept of escaping to different worlds esp ones where people of color aren’t gawked at like circus freaks is all very hopeful and beautiful. although the villain didn’t seem to be as strong as i hoped but nonetheless the story of January Scholar tugged at the right heartstrings and kept me well engaged throughout!
