Old Man's War (Old Man's War, #1) opens Goodreads in a new tab

John Scalzi

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce, and alien races willing to fight for them are common. So the Colonial Union recruits seniors who are given young, enhanced bodies and sent to fight for habitable worlds. Perry soon learns the universe is far stranger, and more dangerous, than he expected.

My thoughts

john scalzi is easily becoming a new favourite author of mine to read. simple sci-fi with the tech explained in easy terms- definitely beginner friendly and with a healthy dash of humour. bonus- the humanitarian aspect of military sci-fi, which usually isn’t my jam due to the unnecessary gore and violence of a specific kind they entail mostly for shock value. this wasn’t that at all and i thoroughly enjoyed reading it and will be picking up the next book asap!
