The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1) opens Goodreads in a new tab
Becky Chambers
When Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn't expecting much. The patched-up ship has seen better days, but it offers her everything she could want: a spot to call home, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and some distance from her past. Nothing could be further from what she has known than the crew of the Wayfarer, who are offered the job of a lifetime tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet. It is lucrative but dangerous, and Rosemary discovers the meaning of family in the far reaches of the universe.

My thoughts
3/5 stars We cannot blame ourselves for the wars our parents start. Sometimes the very best thing we can do is walk away. I am clearly in the minority here but hear me tf out before coming @ me. I love a well-developed character. I love myself some character-driven stories. I love that stuff okay. But this book? this book had- a. A fucking drag in the name of the story b. Stereotypical oh-i-love-everyone-lets-be-besties characters, with the obvious singular exception because you know, why not? c. Zero fucking semblance to a coherent plot. Like one second there was a pirate attack and suddenly it is all settled, pirates are ready to negotiate??? like bro where is the action? d. Never ending moral lessons? IT IS NOT A CHILDREN'S BOOK FFS?? just gimme the damn story instead of pages and pages of lectures, I really don't care. e. At one point we have a mention of a sentient AI (because yk why not?) and I have so many issues with that whole thing like- despite AIs being "human-like" and sentient they have absolutely zero rights and are 100% under the control of humans. Their existence can be deleted whenever humans want? Isn't this fucking weird? This might sound like I absolutely hated the book, but no. I mean I knew going in that this is a character-based story so I was yk prepared for it. But the characters are also so fucking ~cliche~ I just didn't feel attached or cared for any of them so much. So why do are you even rating it 3 stars then? Well, I am glad you asked! while this story lacks a lot in terms of being a sci-fi book, there is something that more than makes up for it. And that is the diversity of characters. and I don't mean only in terms of gender, sexuality, or age. I mean there are people from literally all over the universe, and the fact that life outside of earth is not only an idea but a prominent theme in this book was very refreshing and heartwarming. I loved the different characters, their backgrounds, and everything about that. This is why this book deserves a 3 star. Rant over, kay thanks bye! Such a quintessentially Human thing, to express sorrow through apology.
