Annihilation (Southern Reach, #1) opens Goodreads in a new tab
Jeff Vandermeer
Area X has been cut off from the rest of the world for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization, and previous expeditions have ended in disaster or death. In Annihilation, the first volume of the Southern Reach trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition: four women, an anthropologist, a surveyor, a psychologist who is the de facto leader, and the narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain, record their observations, and above all avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.

My thoughts
3.5/5 stars I was like "Ok, now what? What’s going on? What are we doing? What’s the purpose? what the hell is going on? "but like in a mesmerizing way?!?!? i don't know man this book was weird and i know it won the nebula, and considering i loved "the road" by Cormac McCarthy (based on similar themes) this one was meh. I will read the second book tho, at some point because why the hell not? But i have no desire to get to it sooner rather than later, yk? “some questions will ruin you if you are denied the answer long enough.” Book Trigger Warnings- Intimate partner violence recounted, Suicide & attempted suicide discussed, Alcohol consumption, Blood & gore depiction, including physical injuries, Dead bodies, Terminal cancer recounted, Hospital mentioned, Death of a husband recounted, Murder, Gun violence, Mind control & loss of autonomy (theme), Animal attack
