Casey McQuiston

Cynical twenty-three-year-old August moves to New York City, believing that magic and cinematic love stories do not exist. Then on the subway she meets Jane, a girl who looks like an old-school punk rocker, and falls for her. But Jane is literally displaced in time from the 1970s. August sets out to do everything in her power to save the girl lost in time. A magical, big-hearted queer romance.

My thoughts

3.5/5stars When you spend your whole life alone, it's incredibly appealing to move somewhere big enough to get lost in. Where being alone looks like a choice. I wish I could have liked this as much as everyone else did. But like, no? It wasn't in any way a bad book but did anything about it stand out to me? No. Did I at times while reading this feel bored? and also questioning my knowledge of science? yes. like I am all for fiction and fantasy but in a romance novel if you make me question basic science IDK what to do? Yes the sapphic romance was very heart-warming and gushing and I might have been this close to crying but the other 70% of the book was just meh. I don't think I can overlook that "boring" part for the few pages of w|w relationship paras. Again, I think I am in the minority here but like, it is what it is. I don't think I will be picking up anything more by this author now. But I do see how this might work for someone else. If you are someone who can overlook the whole illogical part of it and focus only on the bits of sapphic romance, maybe it might work for you. The older she’s gotten, the more she prefers thinking of love as a hobby for other people, like rock climbing or knitting. Fine, enviable even, but she doesn’t feel like investing in the equipment. Book Trigger Warnings: Queermisia discussed, Racism & gentrification mentioned, Hate crimes, including the UpStairs Lounge fire, recounted (chp. 11), Anxiety, Hurricane Katrina discussed, Alcohol consumption & recreational drug use, Minor mention of blood, Death of a grandparent mentioned (chps. 11 & 16), Car accident mentioned (chp. 16)
