A Room of One’s Own opens Goodreads in a new tab
Virginia Woolf
An extended essay based on two lectures Virginia Woolf delivered in October 1928 at Newnham College and Girton College, the women's colleges of the University of Cambridge. Taking women and fiction as her theme, Woolf examines women writers through history, their successes and failures, and themes of gender inequality and education. She argues that a woman must have money and a room of her own, literally and figuratively, in order to write. It remains a foundational work of feminist literature and a landmark argument for a space for women writers in a literary tradition dominated by men.
