Hell of a Book opens Goodreads in a new tab
Jason Mott
A Black author sets out on a cross-country publicity tour to promote his bestselling novel, which is also called Hell of a Book. In alternating chapters we meet Soot, a young Black boy in a rural town in the recent past, and The Kid, a possibly imaginary child who appears to the author on tour. Heartbreaking and magical, the novel is about family, love of parents and children, art and money, and the nation's reckoning with a tragic police shooting replaying on the news, and what it can mean to be Black in America. Winner of the 2021 National Book Award for Fiction.

My thoughts
4.5/5 rounded up. don’t you just love it when you read a book that is so utterly bizarre you start questioning your own brain like what even is going on. but then it fully pays off by the end- you’re left with a poignant and utterly devastating story that you have no choice but to close the book and just sit with that feeling for a bit and rethink your whole reading experience. yeah that!
